How to use the date difference calculator

This tool tells you how much time lies between two calendar dates. It is useful for planning projects, checking notice periods, counting down to an event, tracking how long something has lasted, or working out the length of a trip. Everything is calculated in your browser as soon as you press the button.

Calculate the time between two dates

  1. Choose a start date and an end date.
  2. Tick Include the end date if both the first and the last day should count.
  3. Select Calculate difference to see the total days, a years/months/days breakdown, weeks, hours, minutes and a weekday count.

If you enter the dates in the wrong order, the calculator swaps them for you and tells you so, so the result is never negative.

Example: 1 January to 26 October

From 1 January 2026 to 26 October 2026 there are 298 days. As a calendar breakdown that is 9 months and 25 days, or 42 full weeks and 4 days. The months are counted first (1 January to 1 October is exactly 9 months), then the remaining 25 days up to 26 October.

Why include or exclude the end date?

Counting conventions differ. The difference between 1 March and 7 March is 6 days if you count how many days have passed. A hotel booking or a leave request that covers both 1 March and 7 March uses 7 days, because both the first and the last day are used. Contracts, leave policies and legal deadlines each have their own rule, so check the wording that applies to you and use the checkbox to match it.

Why months are not a fixed number of days

Calendar months last 28, 29, 30 or 31 days, and years have 365 or 366 days. A simple "30 days per month" estimate drifts away from the real answer over time. This calculator works with real calendar dates, so leap years and different month lengths are handled automatically.

Understanding the weekday count

The weekday figure counts Monday to Friday within the selected range, and the weekend figure counts Saturday and Sunday. Public holidays vary by country, region and employer, so they are not subtracted. If you are estimating working days, subtract the holidays that apply to you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the number of days between two dates?

Enter a start date and an end date, then select Calculate difference. The calculator counts the calendar days from the start date up to, but not including, the end date, unless you tick the option to include the end date.

Should I include the end date in the count?

It depends on the rule you are following. Counting from 1 March to 7 March gives 6 days, because the end date is not counted. If both the first and last day should be counted, for example a 7-day booking from 1 to 7 March, tick Include the end date to get 7 days.

How are months counted when months have different lengths?

The calculator counts full calendar months first and then the remaining days, borrowing the length of the earlier month when needed. This is why 31 January to 1 March is 0 months and 29 days in a non-leap year, not 1 month.

Does the weekday count exclude public holidays?

No. Weekdays are Monday to Friday and weekend days are Saturday and Sunday. Public holidays differ by country and region, so they are not subtracted. Deduct them manually if your calculation needs it.
